Cesarean Section – What You Need To Know

March 26, 2016 by Christina Hemming Leave a Comment

It is important to be properly informed of a cesarean section while pregnant, whether you’re planning on it or not.  Emergency c-sections are a reality and it’s best to be prepared. Here is what you should know about c-sections and information to discuss with your doctor, to ensure you and your baby’s safety and recovery.

Misgav Ladach method for Cesarean Birth

  • The Misgav Ladach Method has been shown to have fewer side effects with a faster recovery.
  • The main difference with the standard way of C Sections, is they go through the muscle belly below the belly button with their fingers and pull open the muscles to expose the Uterus.
  • Less bleeding and a faster recovery are the benefits, but a small scar under the belly button would be the main downside. In our opinion the small exposed scar is worth not having the tendon cut and the bladder removed during the surgical birth.

C Safe Scalpel

  • Please ask your doctor to reduce any chances of baby being hurt by using the protective plastic C Safe scalpel.
  • Approximately 45,000 babies are cut each year during Cesarean surgical births.
  • The Dr. can also use a Hemostatic Agent to reduce your internal bleeding.

Vitagel to reduce bleeding and promote a quick recovery

  • Hemostatic Agents can greatly reduce internal bleeding, abdominal adhesions and speed healing.
  • We found Vitagel by Stryker Corp. to be effective for C Section healing.
  • Helps stop bleeding and has collagen to promote healing.

“Seeding” Babies with Bacteria from Birth Canal Fluids

  • Using gauze to transfer vaginal fluids from mother to baby, provides a healthy population of necessary bacteria.
  • Together with bacteria and viruses that help us digest food and ward off illnesses.  The bacteria in the vagina is part of the microbiom, a collection of trillions of microbes that keep our bodies functioning
  • Studies over the past few years have hinted that this difference could change the way a baby’s immune system develops, and explain why C-section babies are more prone to things like allergies and asthma.

Abdominal Surgery Belly Band Support Wrapc-section care and healing

  • Cesarean or vaginal births both require compression to help the tissue shrink back. This is doubly true after c-section to help the incision heal and to get you back to your pre pregnant shape.
  • Wearing a belly band will allow you to move more easily while reducing pain.
  • Shrink your hips, tummy and create a smaller scar with the C Section Recovery Kit.

Scar Care and Massage

  • Massage is a proven technique and modality to improve tissue modeling for a healthier and stronger scar after a C Section.  Combine with essential oils to boost effects.
  • The tissue that was cut upset the organization of the collagen fibers, and simple techniques done consistently can make a big difference between having a lumpy or smooth scar.
  • Massage also improves circulation and helps release chemicals in the body to reduce stress and improve your well-being.
  • Reducing the internal scarring reduces other complications, such as incontinence, bowel obstruction, infertility and back pain.

Nutrition

  • To assist in digestion, have soups and smoothies in the first few days after birth.
  • Consume a lot of protein, iron, and vitamin C. Protein helps your body tissue heal and repair as well as build muscle, iron is vital for blood loss, and vitamin C can help fight potential infection.
  • Drink at least one cup of bone broth per day to help restore vital nutrients depleted during blood loss, and collagen to boost healing.
  • Cesarean mamas should not be lifting, cleaning, or cooking for quite some time (easier said than done, right Mamas?!).

Postpartum Care For Great Sex

March 10, 2016 by Christina Hemming Leave a Comment

Postpartum Recovery and Care

The greater you care for your body, the quicker you will heal, and the quicker you will be safe to have sex. Recovery begins in the last few months of your pregnancy. Your partner can begin to stretch your vagina to prepare for childbirth, use this time as erotic foreplay. With lubrication, have your mate take two fingers and circle the inside of the vagina. This will bring calming attention to the area and added flexibility, prior to the transformation of childbirth.

Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or C-section, your body has gone through huge changes. Vaginal births have the potential to tear your vagina, leaving you 5-6 weeks to heal before making love. C-section births require healing from the incision, and bladder and organ displacement. C-section’s healing process before it’s comfortable and safe to have sex is less than a vaginal birth at about 4-6 weeks, there can however be other issues with sex after a cesarean.

Belly binding is one of the most important things aside from good nutrition and rest when recovering from pregnancy and childbirth. A support belt compresses the abdomen to reduce pain, discomfort, and swelling from an incision. The belt offers protection and support to increase mobility, so you’re able to perform daily functions.

Massaging with essential oils is another integral part of the postpartum healing process. Use this time for intimate massage as well.  Touch and genuine affection is just as nourishing as making love. Essential oils also provide the body with the nutrients it needs to reduce scars and stretch marks.

Having an exciting and fulfilling sex life is just as important as caring for your baby. Transforming the intimacy with your baby to each other can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Properly tending to your mind, body, and soul will ensure your families health, happiness, and prosperity.

C-Section Babies And Mothers Vaginal Microbes

February 4, 2016 by C-Section Recovery admin 2 Comments

As we wrote about in the article c-section babies microbial life, babies born via c-section do not benefit from the exposure to the microbial life in the birth canal and vagina of the mother. This lack of exposure has been linked to an increased risk of asthma, allergies, obesity and some immune deficiencies.

After the discovery of some microbes negative effect on our health it has taken us some time to recognize that there are far more microbes that have a positive effect. We are only just beginning to understand the positive effects of the relationship of the microbes that make up our human micro biome and our health.

In this process of discovery a small study was undertaken at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The study was made up of 18 babies, 7 vaginally born and 11 by c-section. Four of the c-section babies were swabbed with a gauze that had been “incubated”  in the vagina of the mother for an hour prior to the c-section. Two minutes after delivery the newborn was then swabbed with it.

Subsequent testing  found that the 4 babies that underwent this vaginal fluid swabbing were closer in microbial resemblance to those born vaginally than the unexposed c-section-babies. Three sites were tested in this way, skin, mouth and anus with the difference proving more distinct in the oral and skin samples.

Obviously it won’t be until longer follow up research is complete that we ail know just how long these differences last and how the children’s longer term health may be effected.

What’s important is that the research into this relationship between the exposure to the mothers vaginal microbes and the babies developing immune system and health, are taking place. If longer term and larger group studies prove there are health benefits to cesarean babies then in time this will hopefully become a standard practice for all c-section births.

C Section Birth And After Care Plan for C Section Recovery

January 3, 2014 by Christina Hemming Leave a Comment

The need to improve C Section birth is long overdue. While studies and research are slow, there are some upgrades that we can share concerning surgical birth. While C-Sections may be elective, there is no doubt that major surgery for birth doesn’t come without complications and future issues down the road. Instead of focusing on how many surgeries are occurring, let’s concentrate on upgrading the procedure while considering the health and wellbeing of the mother and her baby. Whether you ask for the Misgav Ladach method for cesarean, which uses glue instead of staples, or Vitagel to stop internal bleeding, being proactive in your Doctor’s choices and patterns can make a difference for you in your surgical outcome.

First, there is a new scalpel for incising the uterus, made out of plastic that has been developed called the C-Safe scalpel. This scalpel reduces the chances of baby being cut and hurt during the operation. Approximately 45,000 babies are cut every year in the US alone during C-Sections.

The gentle C-Section has been developed in England.  A mirror is placed above which shows mom the baby’s birth, lights are turned lower, and baby is brought up to mom’s chest for skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth, while she is being closed after surgery. This helps bonding as the oxytocin in the blood – that is the feel good, love chemical – is not as present in surgical births, unless it is an emergency C-Section. Also the exposure to bacteria on mom’s skin helps develop baby’s immune system and assists in breastfeeding.

Cotton binders for post-surgical support have been shown to increase the ability to walk and hold baby, while reducing pain and stress for mom. Modern fabrics and materials make binding the tummy much easier and more comfortable than ever before, so that the ancient wisdom of bringing the stretched tissue back into the body, reminding the tissue of the original shape to shrink back to, helps the skin, and organs to relax now that the space has been vacated.

After C Section in hospital

Hemostatics like Vitagel can help reduce bleeding and reduce the amount of cauterization they do. Pads like Ethicon by JnJ can help reduce internal tacking in between organs, especially if you keloid.

Remember to ask and discuss all aspects of your procedure with your Doctor so you can have the best birth possible. Use C Section Recovery belly bands to assist you in getting out of bed and walking post surgery along with the Massage DVD for your continued health care regime. Scar tissue can create pain and issues, so a few minutes a day can really help your scar be soft and heal well.
