Post Partum Care to include binder especially after Cesarean Section birth

After C Section in hospital

Binding is an ancient tool for Pregnancy Support, C Section birth and postnatal support. While pregnant binding lifts baby off of pubic bone and helps stabilize the pelvis. After birth Compression brings fibers together, reduces swelling and tearing and at the same time offers some protection for the incision. Soft abdominal binders help support the changing body through pregnancy, vaginal delivery & Cesarean Section recovery.

You deserve support and protection at this special time, but the ancient healing art of binding is less well known today as I discovered after my own emergency c section. During pregnancy abdominal binders support the weight of the baby and the body, and reduces the load on the skin and stretched out abdominal muscles. If there isn’t enough support or silica/elastic properties to the skin, stretch marks can happen.

Cesarean Section birth requires special recovery care, as surgery is stressful, painful and now a new baby requires your loving attention. Binding will reduce your pain and scar, and make it easier to get out of bed.  Binding will protect and support your incision before rolling over to get out of bed. Compression supports your abdomen so it doesn’t feel like your insides are going to fall out, and will reduce scar tissue. Many women do not realize that the Doctor cut into 6 layers inside the abdomen, and then stretched open the muscles. With binding you avoid the feeling of feeling unsupported, vulnerable to gravity and afraid to move.

It is the fascia that surrounds the muscles which is cut, and then the 6 layers are sutured (sewn) back. For any birth, the uterus and intestines also benefit from support, as it shrinks and moves back into place. Of course do not do anything that is painful,  and please be mindful to not wrap yourself too tightly. It is about support, not strangulation or cutting off blood supply. Being gentle and easy with yourself during these first months will help you heal better for later on, when life gets busier.

Binding also supports organs to go back to their original size and location. The uterus shrinks up to 50% within the first 3 days, so its important to support tummy.Abdomend063

Bladder, intestinal and reproductive complications can arise from a c-section or other abdominal surgeries. The support of binding means less tearing, which means less scar tissue, inside and out. Less scar tissue means more comfort and fewer secondary complications and a better looking scar. With belly binding you can avoid the tearing and infections that lead to possible abdominal adhesions, painful periods, and a lumpy scar.

Our uniquely designed C Section Recovery Belt does not contain elastic making it perfect for immediate use after c section birth or other abdominal surgery. We designed it to be as soft and yet adjustable, to allow you to find the perfect binding pressure and adjust it as you heal. We then came up with the detachable support strap, which does contain elastic, for another level of fully adjustable support, font or back.

The cotton covered elastic provides firm support when you are getting back to your daily routine, or just going to the car with baby. After incising through the 6 layers, our muscles were stretched open to get the baby out, so holding them close is a good thing.

C Section procedures and After C Section Care ideas to discuss with your Doctor

Care after a c section, or your recovery is very important or mom and baby. The procedure itself can be done a variety of ways, including watching baby being born in mirror- the Jentle C Section, and  skin to skin time with baby while being closed instead of baby being taken away right away. It is important for people to question the Dr, and discuss the surgery for the best solutions to their bodies’ needs. For example, if you keloid easily, you would want to ask for a hemostatic (Vitagel or others) to be used, to reduce bleeding and scarring inside (pads placed internally like Ethicon) can help….to sew up all 6 layers, to perhaps do the Misgav Ladach Method for cesarean which has a proven lower level of secondary complications, or to use glue or do the new fusion closing for your skin surface. You could ask your Dr if they use the new C Safe scalpel to reduce the chances of baby being cut during the operation, currently 45,000 babies are cut annually during cesarean birth. Blood loss can be a serious issue and should be discussed with Doctor, as well as delaying cutting the cord for several minutes for baby’s longterm health benefits.

One should have a binder for post surgery recovery, have a massage routine for wellbeing, and a scar care plan. My emergency c section didn’t allow me to plan these things, but I have learned and go to c section recovery kit for tips on how to recover. Ask your Dr for your medical records before leaving the hospital so you can have them for your future use in case you have another c/s or other issues.
Bring your binder to the hospital so you can get out of bed, walk and hold baby easily and comfortably! Talk to your friends and share your experiences so you can make informed choices.

300 mom newborn blue drapeWomen throughout the world are having c sections for different reasons, some are necessary and others are not. Health and wellbeing for all beings is important as well as long term affects on mother, like bladder incontinence or sterility issues and the immune system for baby.

This writer firmly believes based on evidence , at the FDA, that choosing a C Section over a Vacuum or forcep assisted birth, is  better. Empirical evidence on vacuums and forceps show that the finesse and education of the Doctor for the tool is key to avoiding issues or death of baby. My own experience shows that the trauma from a vacuum or forceps is too much for baby, and has much greater issues, like jaw trouble, eye sight and headaches for baby as they grow up, which can last a lifetime. Do your research and make your plan before you go into labor. We can want a home birth, but sometimes a cesarean is what is needed to keep baby and mom alive. All the best in creating your best childbirth experience, write out your plan and have a neutral person help you make decisions when your in a sticky situation, which none of us wants during childbirth. A calm and joyful experience is the goal for childbirth.

Increase Iron levels in baby’s blood by delaying clamping of umbilical cord

July 23, 2013 by Christina Hemming 1 Comment

Help improve Iron levels for baby: Delay Umbilical cord being cut 2-5 minutes later

Newborn baby
Newborn baby

Delaying  the umbilical chord being cut by 1-5 minutes , or allowed drain until pulse is gone, improves iron levels in baby 3-6 months later. Improving the  oxygenation of the blood, and hemoglobin, increasing the health of the baby. Ask your Dr to allow more  time for blood to flow and get to baby after your birth. After you have given birth, the placenta delivery occurs, and you may want to try a Lotus Birth. Not cutting the cord and delivering the placenta while keeping  the umbilicus attached for a couple of days,  its called a Lotus Birth.
As you’re probably well aware, iron is very important for your body, and baby.  Too much iron in adults can cause severe health problems, but this is about a newborn feeding of blood nourishment from mother.
Iron serves many functions in your body, but one of the most important is to bind to the hemoglobin molecule and serve as a carrier of oxygen to your tissues. Without proper oxygenation your cells quickly start dying. Since low iron levels have been linked to neural development problems, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has considered updating its birthing guidelines to accommodate this important information included here.
“When a baby is born, about a third of the baby’s blood is still in their cord and placenta,” began Phipps. “With no good evidence to support it, it is accepted practice to accelerate the arrival of the placenta with an injection and clamp and cut the cord immediately, depriving the baby of this blood. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that things need to change. It is time all those who are becoming parents were informed about the disadvantages of early clamping or cutting.

If your having a vaginal birth then you have an option of delivering the placenta, and keeping the umbilical cord attached, allowing it to sever in its own time…..described in depth in the book Lotus Birth. Of course standard clamping after birth is always a choice.  Doctors can deliver the placenta in different ways and the proper delivery is important for blood loss for mother, remember to discuss this with your Doctor. The less blood lost the better.  Nourish yourself and baby after childbirth, by eating and drinking nourishing foods, having friends or family help you so you can attend to baby.

If you delay  just by 2-5 minutes you can improve the hemoglobin count in baby. When the cord is clamped/cut after baby is born, you can keep the placenta, dehydrate and placed into caps…..or cook it with chard onions etc to help nourish the body after childbirth. Eating the placenta nourishes the body with rich iron after the blood loss of birth. Another method is to plant the placenta under a new planting a tree.

Aside from blood loss, the first adhesion or scar we have on our body is the belly button, and the natural closure may add to a relaxed center in our abdomen,  and provide a nicer belly button.
The second would be the less hurried, more relaxed approach to severing the tie with the mother. Pregnancy, labor and birth are a process, and so this time needs to be honored by keeping things simple. This method requires some perseverance, as the placenta stays with baby for 3 days or so…..so care and consideration for that has to happen by the parents.

If your having a c section, then a practical approach would be to request the Dr allow a couple of minutes for the blood from the placenta to enter baby, before closing you up.  This is something you need to discuss before surgery with the Dr in order to create the space for that to happen.  Wear your binder, so you can move, walk and breastfeed baby more easily or just reduce baby’s breathing and iron levels.”your back pain.bikini_1
One side effect of a cesarean baby is the higher incidence of jaundice, and more blood can accentuate that issue. Consult your Midwife RN or Doctor about the different therapies for baby with jaundice. Personally I made up a tincture of charcoal, and one of jarrodopholis, which I gave to baby while breastfeeding. I also placed him in the sunlight for a couple of minutes a day. His color returned to normal within 1 week. I also massaged his tummy lightly during the day. Please consult your Doctor or Midwife for your baby’s care.

Here are some ideas around Anemia:
Ask Dr to Diagnose the Underlying Cause of baby’s  or your Anemia
If you don’t have enough iron in your body, you end up with iron deficiency anemia. This is a common problem for two primary groups: children, and menstruating women (typically between 15-50 years old).
Anemia can also be caused by:
    •    Acute blood loss- or lack of blood from early cord clamping
    •    Other nutritional anemias such as vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiencies
    •    Genetic hemolytic anemias such as sickle cell anemia, and thalassemia (also known as Mediterranean anemia).  It’s a type of genetic anemia where the hemoglobin is not well formed. As a result your red blood cells become very small, so you have a larger number of them, and a relatively low number of hemoglobin
Anemia is relatively easy to diagnose, but it’s important to diagnose the true cause of your (baby’s) anemia. Enjoy the birth process, as we have waited all that time, and then the moment comes and goes so quickly when reviewing the whole story, so enjoy and be safe.

General Anaesthesia for unplanned emergency C Section can increase chances of death

June 3, 2013 by Christina Hemming Leave a Comment

c-section birthEpideurals are linked with lower death rates for unplanned C Sections found in a study in the UK. Women undergoing an uplanned C Section with General anaesthesia have a higher morbidity/mortality rate than those who received an epideural due to maternal cardiac arrest  or other factors. An increase in epideural techniques can help with pain relief and surgical flexibility for emergency situations with fewer side effects.Once a person has a C Section, the chances that a future Cesarean will be increased which also strains the medical care system and can contribute to more problems for maternal health.

Bleeding also contributes to complications for maternal health. Some type of hemostatic or coagulator should be used to reduce chances of bleeding. Different types of surgery, like the Misgav Ladach method also can contribute to less bleeding as the patient is open for a shorter period.

Interestingly enough , the cost for a C Section is only 500-1000 GBP- British Pounds,  more than a delivery by a midwife (which is only $2000)! Amazing, since the general cost for a C Section in the US is around $15,000 per surgery, and my midwife was $3000. The UK system finds the cost to be a drain to their general funds for the overall cost to their population, but the cost for a Cesarean is much lower in the UK.  Strains on the medical system for medical costs are a concern in the UK as well as in the USA.

Recovery and abdominal adhesions are not discussed in this article. We know that recovery and reducing secondary complications is very important for both family and society. Please bind and do massage post surgery, and have in depth conversations with your Doctor  or health care provider about your birth and possible scenarios that might be encountered, if the at home /hospital orgasmic birth fades out of the picture.

High rate of C Sections in Switzerland

May 13, 2013 by Christina Hemming Leave a Comment

c section deliveryShould Midwives be allowed to actively participate in a Hospital setting to work with the Obstetrician in births? This is the question we are led to when discussing the high rate of cesareans in a country as wealthy as Switzerland where rates can be as high as 43%.

Asking for a second opinion can shift away from a quick c section, if a vaginal birth is an option. Insurance providers and questions of safety and security are other factors in quick decisions to do a c section.

A survey found that poorer regions in Switzerland had fewer c sections and midwives were more prominent in the birth experience, than wealthier areas where c-section delivery is higher.

In my own experience the Hospital rejected my RN midwife and I felt disempowered in the emergency room, as the communication was hostile and I was immediately placed upon the conveyor belt of a forced vaccum only then to have my baby by cesarean, a dangerouse situation indeed……PTSD after the c section, not really, it was the horror of the vacuum extraction that injured my baby and made the Dr say to me, gee he was really stuck in your pelvis……why yes you vacuum his head 2 times trying to pull him out of my pelvis!

Please write a birth plan down  before the time comes and stick to it with partner in birth clinic, hospital or home to be a guiding light during a intense birth process, if it seems to not be as smoothe as you had hoped.
